Abstract

This paper first discusses the "perils of prophecy" - both favourable and adverse forecasts - and the successes and failures in forecasting the future. With reference to the current "melt-down" or down-tum", there have been more failures than successes. Several analysts have examined the causes and consequences of the melt-down, and the probable future scenarios.
