Abstract: This paper examines the role of rent seeking in the financial sector with special reference to the banking industry in India. The banking industry was chosen for the study due to many important factors such as, it is leading intermediary in the financial sector, and it has grown in leaps and bounds after 1991 economic and financial reforms and accounts for more than 64% of the total assets held by the Indian financial system.
