Abstract: The Anti-defection statute has a great relevance in Indian democracy. Political defections in India persist despite the Anti-Defection Laws being put into place, which begs the question of how efficient these laws are at preserving political stability and discouraging opportunistic behavior on the part of elected officials. This study looks into the causes of political defections’ continued occurrence in India and assesses how well the Anti-Defection Laws work to solve the problem. The law’s historical context, its clauses, their effects on political parties, and how the legislative process operates will all be examined in this paper. In addition to looking at proposed changes to the current system, the report will also analyze the arguments and complaints made against the law.
