Recently, there has been a growing research interest in sodium alginate-derived nanocomposites for water purification applications owing to their nontoxicity, biodegradability and the ability to form complexes with toxic heavy metals. Therefore, sodium alginate-based composites are being employed to eliminate various organic and inorganic toxic materials from wastewater. The incorporation of nanoparticles increases alginate’s specific surface area, mechanical strength, and adsorption capacity. Hydrogels, beads, and aerogels based on sodium alginate-derived nanocomposites are developed for water remediation and separation of various contaminants. This chapter addresses different alginate-based nanocomposites and their adsorption phenomenon to mitigate water pollution. Additionally, the adsorption mechanism of various nanocomposites and sustainable considerations are discussed. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.en_US
