Abstract: The development of novel water treatment technologies is a thriving area of research nowadays. Polymeric membranes modified with nanomaterials have emerged as promising solutions for high-performance water purification. The incorporation of metal and metal oxide nanoparticles induces antifouling properties, antimicrobial properties, self-cleaning, photocatalytic activity, mechanical strength, etc., in the polymeric membranes. This chapter discusses the major metal and metal oxide nanoparticles used for the preparation of polymeric nanocomposite membranes for water purification. This chapter also summarizes the fabrication and development of various polymeric membranes with metal/metal oxide nanoparticles with antifouling, antibacterial, photocatalytic, and adsorption properties. © 2024 WILEY-VCH GmbH, Boschstraße 12, 69469 Weinheim, Germany.
