Abstract: This study presents an Energy-efficient hybrid optimisation-based cross layer routing (HObCLR) protocol designed for smart waste management systems. The protocol incorporates crosslayer optimisation approaches to improve energy efficiency at the edge, which is critical for sustained system operations. Begin with real-time task profiling; the protocol properly estimates requirements through a grid-based routing technique. It then leverages adaptive resource allocation using Grey Wolf Optimisation to optimise resource utilisation at the edge. Dynamic routing technologies, notably Hybrid Moth Search and Salp Swarm Communication, are used to reduce energy consumption while transmitting data among edge nodes. Comprehensive simulations and experimental validation show that our strategy exceeds baseline methods in energy consumption, network lifetime, throughput, and latency. The findings confirm the efficacy of our cross-layer optimisation technique for energyefficient edge computing in smart waste management systems. © 2024, Scibulcom Ltd.. All rights reserved.
