Abstract: Surface engineering is a growing technology and a most promising technique which is very well accepted by most of the material industrialists today. The present work focuses on, enriching the surface characteristics of the material rather than its bulk. The mild steel specimens were coated with molybdenum and molybdenum-silicon carbide composite coatings using HVOF technique. The developed specimens showed an enhancement in micro hardness and reduction in porosity. The enrichment of the microstructure was justified by subjecting the specimens to SEM and EDAX studies. There is an increase of hardness by 8% in the molybdenum coated specimen and by 23% in the composite coated specimen. © 2018 Elsevier Ltd.
