Abstract: | In recent days, biocomposites have been used in many applications due to their advantages, such as higher modulus, adequate mechanical properties, reduced carbon footprint on the environment, etc. Especially in tropical countries, the coconut (Cocos nucifera) fruits are extensively grown. The coir fibers, derived from the coconut husk, are used in many commercial products: yarns, brushes, ropes, bags, mats, brooms, padding mattresses, etc. This review paper covers the overview of coir fibers, methods of their extraction, and limitations of coir fiber–reinforced composites. Furthermore, the article covers the various fiber surface techniques of coir fibers, such as physical, chemical methods, etc. It is observed that the fiber surface treatments improve the fiber and matrix adhesion. © 2022 Elsevier Ltd.
