Abstract: Countless variety of genetically modified (GM) crops, including both food and non-food crops having novel qualities have been created and let out for commercial agriculture production. Moreover, numerous GM crops are being worked on and not yet released commercially. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in its report, the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2017, highlighted the severity of food security and malnourishment issue in a large portion of the Asian and developing countries. GM crops could be a possibility for nutrients enhancement and yield increment in significant crops and has a taken care of the issue of malnourishment and food security. India has advanced immensely in GM crops research, assessment and observing in most recent two decades yet regulatory system hindered gravely because of lack of coordination and common stand on GM technology across different ministries, departments and governments. The expanding development of genetically modified crops has raised a wide scope of worries as for food safety, environmental effects and socio-economic issues. In this dissertation, we study the current status of GM crops research, its regulatory framework, and the challenges involved with transgenic plants research in India
