Abstract: Karnataka has conducive agro climatic conditions for sugarcane cultivation resulting in increased sugarcane production year after year, giving scope for establishment of more sugar units in the state. In Karnataka sugarcane is produced to the tune of 375.95 lakhstonnes during 2010-11 with an average sugar recovery of 11.01 %. Karnataka Sugar Industry ranks third in terms of its contribution of Sugar in the total sugar production of India. Karnataka stands 4 th in the Country in the cultivation of sugarcane. Sugar Industry in Karnataka contributes around Rs.36 crores per year to the State Exchequer as central excise duty. It also contributes more than Rs. 900 crores in the form of turnover tax and sales tax to the State Exchequer.
