Planar fun ctions were introduced by Dembowski and Ostrom in 1968. Prior to 1997 the only examples of planar functions were Dembowski-Ostrom polynomials. In that year Coulter and Matthews announced the discovery of a planar monomial which was not a DembowskiOstrom polynomial. At present these are the only known types of planar polynomials.-
