Abstract: Financial inclusion has become a daunting challenge as well as necessity for the developing countries. In India too, steps have been taken to provide access of financial services to the weaker section of the society by way of financial inclusion schemes. This paper highlights the progress made on financial inclusion in India and analyses its status m the recent period. The paper analyses the progress of financial inclusion across different areas viz. rural, semi urban, urban and metropolitan. It also highlights distribution of banking centers across different regions. The research is based on secondary data collected from the RBI website for the period between 1980 and 2009.
