Abstract: | A numerical technique has been adopted for the two different types of static mixers, namely continuous helical and segmented helical baffled static mixers, with an objective to accomplish maximum turbulence. For the investigation purpose, water was used as the fluid medium. The thermodynamical parameters viz. pressure, temperature, and velocity were examined for the above said static mixers. The performance of the mixers was analyzed at different Reynolds numbers (Re) viz. 9.95×104 ,4.9×104 , and 2.49×104 . Modelling and analysis have been carried out using a Fluent algorithm. Results showed that vortices were triggered on both sides of the baffle faces in a segmented baffled design. However, a similar phenomenon was observed only on one side of the baffle in case of a continuous baffled design. Also, with the increase in Reynolds number, a significant drop in pressure was observed compared to a continuous baffled static mixer. An attempt was made to understand the thermodynamical behavior of the above-said two static mixer designs, that may be useful and economical for industrial applications viz.mixing of different types of the fluid medium. |
