Abstract: | The pathetic condition of transportation sector in India vis-a-vis developed nations such as United States and European countries as narrated at Table I vindicates the genuine requirement of comprehensive reforms required in this arena. Road transport should be given an industry status so that transporters can avail of the benefits of being part of an industry. Construction of more transportation hubs and logistics SEZs should be initiated to create more common shared facilities for transportation. Lack of industry status makes it difficult for transporters to raise capital & debt through organized banking and financial channels. Uniform integrated tolling systems can be introduced, where vehicles need to only slow down rather than completely stop and wait in queues for collection of toll at toll gates. |
