dc.description.abstractIndian banks are fa r less efficient than their global competitors. These banks are passing on added costs to customers. Non Performing Assets (NPAs) are huge and as a result, the financial and economic soundness o f Indian banking system is going into doldrums. Such trends have brought out Indian banks under heavy odds. And the result is that they face stiff competition fo r their sustainability at the global level. The present paper analyzes various critical issues which Indian banks are confronted with. The paper also analyzes the impact o f falling in rupee value on Indian banking system. The paper further suggests how to make these banks more efficient at the global level. Reserxve Bank o f India has to create a level playing field.-
