Insu rance Regulatory and Development Authority came into being in 1999 and permitted the entry of private sector life insurance companies in Indi a. The present study is an attempt to measure the operat ing performance of private sector life insurance com panies operating in India with the help of selected performance indicators for the se lected private sector life insurance companies. The study will help the private sector life insurance companies to rate their relative position in the industry. It will also help the poli yholders and potenti al investors in the field of life insurance to eva luate their investment proposa ls.
