Abstract: The term student engagement stands fo r cognitive, affective and behavioral involvement o f students in educationally relevant and purposeful activities. Empirical studies have found student engagement to be sufficiently important as a “proxy "for determining the quality o f learning that occurs in the classroom. Even though it is a hot topic abroad fo r the last three decades, surprisingly neither research scholars nor educational administrators in India have so fa r taken the initiative to study student engagement. The study on which this paper is based is one o f the several such exploratory studies. The overall objective o f the study is to develop measures fo r studying student engagement, to ascertain the level o f engagement, and to identify the predictors o f student engagement
