Abstract: The diversity of phytoplankton in Mir Alam lake and physico-chemical characteristics of water was studied. The water quality of Mir Alam is assessed with the help of both physico-chemical and phytoplankton. Mir Alam lake is one of the major potable water source of Hyderabad city, A. P. The present study reveals the assessment of water quality and degree of pollution. Physico-chemical parameters analyzed at four stations of the lake, revealed that the water was alkaline with high pH and Carbonates. Hundred and nine species of phytoplankton were recorded from the lake. The species belongs to the four groups of algae viz Chlorophyceae, Cyanophyceae, Bacilla riophyceae and Euglenophyceae. Among the four groups Bacillariophyceae constitutes the highest percentage and followed by Chlorophyceae.
