Abstract: There is perhaps no other event in the History of India, which has attracted so much attention of the scholars and historians as that of the uprising of 1857. In the wake of the 1501h year celebrations of 1857 we find a proliferation of literature on the subject. Even now, with the media in the background books on the topic are coming quite regularly. But despite this, many problems connected with this great event have not been properly resolved. In this paper an effort is being made to draw the attention of scholars to the reasons, particularly the economic causes, behind this uprising and its nature in the then South-East Punjab i.e. Modern Haryana. The reason for choosing this topic is due to the geographical location of Haryana, which in historical accounts is known as 'Gateway of Delhi'. It becomes important to study the different aspects of society, which were responsible for this uprising.
