Abstract: Sasthamkotta Lake is the largest fresh water lake of Kerala in India, which has incidentally figured in the Ramsar list of conservation significant wetlands in 2002. The lake serves as a source of drinking water for half a million people in the Kollam district. In the present study, an altempt has been made to assess the status and seasonal distribution of phytoplankton and zooplankton in the Sasthamkotta fresh water Lake. 83 species of phytoplankters, and relatively smaller number of zooplankters have been identified from samples collected from different locations covering the entire area during pre- monsoon season.
