Abstract: One of the most important aspects in the anaerobic fixed film reactor design is the selection of efficient support material. It has been reported that the organic matter removal efficiency in these reactors is directly related to the characteristics of the support materials used for the immobilization of anaerobes. Anaerobic fixed film reactors have displayed better performance than any other type of anaerobic reactors. They not only work as anaerobic biological treatment for organic matter in the wastewaters but also trap passage of active biomass out of the reactor. This paper reviews the use of fixed-bed reactors in various fields reported by different researchers using variety of packing media.
