Abstract: The term 'information overhead' is of a recent origin. Different definitions have been offered for it. But in precise terms Information Overload would mean a situation when one receives too much of information simultaneously through different channels on diverse matters leading to a perception of being overwhelmed and confused. There are a number of factors that cause information overload or lack of clarity about information needs, or lack of awareness about the source of availability of the required information etc. Impact of information overload on the executives of an organization is the stress it causes at all levels in organization involving significant human cost. One of the measures by which an organization can cope with information overload is implementing an Information Life Cycle Management ([LCM) methodology. Other steps for dealing with information overload include a methodology for valuation of information and information audit. Appropriate policies, standard procedures for filtering information, effective process and procedures for dealing with informational interruptions and effective control on the use of resources such as internet, email. It is also necessary to develop an appropriate Executive Information System (EIS) to aid the strategic decision making process of the board and top management of an organization. The ultimate objective of any organization is developing a comprehensive information system to enable the users to take informed decisions to solve problems, improve productivity and spur creativity.
