dc.description.abstract | This comprehensive chapter explores modern theories shaping product development and design. It delves into human-centric design methodologies like Design Thinking and User-Centered Design which emphasize empathy, prototyping, and usability. Other examined theories include Lean Product Development, emphasizing efficiency; Sustainable Design, prioritizing environmental impact; and Emotional Design, evoking emotional connections. Additional theories covered are Concurrent Engineering, accelerated through cross-disciplinary collaboration; Biomimicry, inspired by nature's designs; and Platform-Based Design enabling product families. The chapter also provides an overview of process tools supporting development activities. Key concepts for understanding customer needs, generating concepts using structured ideation techniques, and modeling product metrics using simulations and analytics are discussed. Design considerations unique to additive manufacturing around topology optimization, surface finishing rules, print direction, and recycling closed loop systems highlight the convergence of robustness and eco-conscious principles. © 2024 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
