Abstract: Chennai is a city located down south in India. It serves as the capital of Tamil Nadu, and the city and the surrounding area serves as a major economic center in India. In the recent past, Chennai is facing an acute water shortage. This is due to two years of inadequate monsoon seasons, and increasing urbanization that caused some encroachment on water bodies in and around the region. There are four reservoirs which are major sources of water supply to Chennai, viz., Poondi, Cholavaram, Redhills, and Chembarambakkam. This paper discusses the major causes of the water crisis while analyzing water levels of four main reservoirs and rainfall levels in reservoir regions. An attempt is made to predict water availability per person in Chennai by using machine learning, and possible measures to rescue the city from the thirst of water are discussed. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd 2021.
