dc.description.abstract | Reengineering is the modification of a software that takes place after it has been reverse engineered, generally to add new functionality, or to correct errors. This entire process is often erronously referred to as reverse engineering; however, it is more accurate to say that reverse engineering is the initial examination of the system, and reengineering is the subsequent modification. Reengineering is mostly used in the context where a legacy system (A legacy system is an old method, technology, computer system, or application program that continues to be used.) is involved. Software systems are evolving at a high rate because they are more researched to make them better legacy software needs to operate on a new computing platform. 'Reengineering' is a set of activities that are carried out to re-structure a legacy system to a new system with better functionalities and conform to the hardware and software quality constraint. Technology is changing at the speed of light every now and then. Therefore your worries about the Tools becoming obsolete and outpaced are justified. Software Re-engineering Process is a course of action in which an analysis of existing software system is done and due modifications are carried out to constitute a new form. The concept of re-engineering aims at understanding the functionality and implementation of existing software, and re-implementing the newer version, to improve the system's functionality and performance. Since considerable time and money is invested in setting-up the legacy systems of your enterprise, its replacement cost is also high. Hence, re-engineering is often a better choiced-engineering Process tools and expertise that assist you in the process of enhancing, upgrading, migrating, or recovering applications, software and information system of your enterprise.
