The decennial Census is the chief source of a variety of statistical information on different characteristics of the people of India. The history of census can be dated back to the year 18 72, 1vhen the first census 1vas candied out in India non-. synchronous in different parts. The responsibility of conducting the decennial Census rests 1vith the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner, India under Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India. A controvert. ry has exploded over the coverage of 'caste' in the 2011 census, after a long gap of seven decades as it 1vas first included in 19 31 by the British.
